Make two copies at once

The ToughTech Duo C can be configured in JBOD, SPAN, RAID 1 or RAID 0. It's easy to change the configuration of your Duo C, but it's ready in RAID 1 mode right out of the box. This means that from the get-go the Duo C automatically makes an identical copy of your data on each of its two drives.

Powerful RAID storage:

  • Compatible with Thunderbolt 3
  • Easily swap 2.5" hard drives or SSDs, no screwdrivers necessary
  • Whatever works: use JBOD, SPAN, RAID 1 or 0
  • Use the 2.5" drives that you already have

Q: In what direction does a RAID 1 rebuild? Is it bay 1 to bay 2, or bay 2 to bay 1?

It depends on whether the ToughTech Duo C was powered on when the drives were inserted. If you want to remove one drive for backup/storage purposes and replace it with a new drive to restore the RAID 1 mirror, you should do so while the power is on. In that case the Duo C will always overwrite the data on the newly inserted drive, whichever bay it is. If you insert two mismatched RAID 1 drives while the power is off, on the other hand, bay 1 will always be considered the source drive, and bay 2 will be overwritten.

Q: Why would the RAID mode of my drives not match the position of the mode selection dial?

The position of the dial only determines what RAID mode is applied to drives when the recessed button is pushed. Otherwise, the RAID mode is determined by RAID settings stored on the drives themselves. In other words, if you are using drives in a RAID 1 pair, the ToughTech Duo C reads the drives at startup and determines the mode should be RAID 1. The dial position is only read when the button is pressed, not at startup.
